Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The FZ82D was launched at a lower price than the D5100, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Of the two cameras under consideration, the Nikon D5100 features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic FZ82D a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the FZ82D is 92 percent smaller. The sensor in the D5100 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the FZ82D offers a 4:3 aspect.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the FZ82D offers a higher resolution of 18 megapixels, compared with 16.1 MP of the D5100. However, it should be noted that the FZ82D is much more recent (by 13 years and 3 months) than the D5100, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. The Nikon D5100 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-25600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ82D are ISO 80 to ISO 3200, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 80-6400.

In terms of underlying technology, the D5100 is build around a CMOS sensor, while the FZ82D uses a BSI-CMOS imager. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the FZ82D provides a better video resolution than the D5100. One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The FZ82D has a touchscreen, while the D5100 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.
